Nokia lets in four new budget models

By admin | April 17, 2008

The news today is that Prism design is no longer reserved for the more expensive handsets. Today the budget Nokia 7070 Prism was made public along with three other handsets - the Nokia 1680 classic, the Nokia 2680 slide, and Nokia 5000. The four new mobile phones targeted at the so-called ‘replacement buyers’ in emerging markets - people that have used a basic mobile phone and are looking to change it for a more advanced model.

The Nokia 7070 Prism is a compact dual-band clamshell (that’s right). It has a 65K TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and weighs only 78 g.

It also sports up to 11MB of user memory for storing MP3 ringtones and has a 1000-entry phonebook. It also has GPRS support and an email client. Unfortunately, there’s no USB or Bluetooth support to transfer files. A built-in camera is also absent.

The Nokia 7070 Prism will be available with either a Pink or Blue accent for around 50 euro in Q3 2008.

The Nokia 5000 sports a thin 11.1 mm design and a number of lively colors. It boasts a 1.3 megapixel camera, FM radio, a music player and Bluetooth support. There’s also GPRS, EDGE and email support.

The Nokia 5000 runs on the S40 user interface and it probably greatest advantage is the QVGA resolution of its 2-inch 65K color TFT display.

The Nokia 5000 will be available in Cyber Green, Neon Blue and Perfect Purple in Q2 2008 somewhere in Q2 2008 for around 90 euro before subsidies and taxes.

The Nokia 2680 Slide is another entry level phone this time with a VGA camera. It has a 65K color TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and sports Bluetooth, FM radio and MP3 ringtones support.

An email client and GPRS/EDGE support are also present. The Nokia 2680 Slide will be available in Slate Gray, Night Blue, Orange and Violet in Q3 2008 for an approximate price of 75 euro before subsidies and taxes.

And finally, the Nokia 1680 classic seems like the successor of the Nokia 1650 - at least they share a rather common design. Dubbed as the most affordable cameraphone to date, the Nokia 1680 classic offers a basic VGA camera with video recording.

The Nokia 1680 classic also offers an email client, GPRS/EDGE support, and MP3 ringtones. It has a 65K color TFT display with 128 x 160 pixels resolution, but unfortunately there’s no Bluetooth available.

The Nokia 1680 classic will be available in Black, Slate Grey, Wine Red and Deep Plum in Q2 2008 for around 50 euro before subsides and taxes.

HTC Touch Cruise review: Happy cruising

By admin | April 13, 2008

Pocket PCs have been keeping us busy these days. Just as we gave you LG KS20, it’s time for our one-on-one with the HTC Touch Cruise. And hey, are those workhorses getting sexier or what. As one of our readers sharply observed, those devices just don’t have to yell corporate or geek any more. One of the best looking Pocket PCs around, the HTC Touch Cruise will surely turn heads. Besides, its feature set is on par with the attire, which explains our eagerness to put it through its paces. Wi-Fi, HSDPA, 2.8″ Touchscreen display and a 3 megapixel camera surely make it one of the most loaded devices around. And, not least, we just couldn’t wait to rev up the new TouchFLO.

Key features

Main disadvantages

HTC Touch Cruise is surely one of the most interesting Windows Mobile Pro devices to hit the shelves recently. It features the new version of HTC’s TouchFLO interface and one of the heaviest feature sets in the PocketPC class. It is very close in terms of specifications to the omnipresent HTC TyTN II, except for the hardware QWERTY keyboard. However the Cruise is incomparably lighter and thinner and - as we see it - much better looking. Not that looks are the first thing about a PocketPC.

Motorola MING A1800 is dual-SIM, dual-network

By admin | April 11, 2008

The Motorola MING A1800 is a highly intriguing device that recently leaked online. It can work with two SIM cards, but what’s even better it can work with two networks standards as well - CDMA and quad-band GSM.

Boy Genius Report recently got a hold of the otherwise officially unannounced Motorola MING A1800, which comes as an update of the Linux-based MING lineup. Having in mind the CDMA functionality, it’s almost sure that the handset will be targeted at the American market, still it would be perfectly usable n Europe too.

Motorola announces MOTO Z9 and Smart Rider carphone

By admin | April 11, 2008

After a heap of Motorola rumors that have been spreading online like wildfire and after a lot of debate about the mishaps of their Mobile division, the US-based company is finally announcing two new GSM handsets, targeted mainly at the US.

The Motorola Z9 we already thoroughly told you about is finally out with a signed deal with the US carrier AT&T. The Z9 slider has quad-band GSM support and dual-band UMTS support (HSDPA 3.6 Mbps). Behind the fashionable glossy red surface you might also find stereo Bluetooth, a microSD memory card slot (up to 8GB cards), and a 2 megapixel snapper.

The Motorola Z9 will also make use of the proprietary AT&T GPS Navigator service thanks to the built-in GPS receiver. Bear in mind that it seems this is the first AT&T feature phone to feature GPS at all.

The Motorola Z9 is yours for grabs for only $150 after a special online discount at AT&T website. You still have to sign a 2-year contract with them though.

The Motorola M990 Smart Rider In-Vehicle Phone certainly won’t grab first place at a beauty contest, but it features a built-in GPS receiver and interactive voice activation.

The Motorola M990 Smart Rider phone has a 2.8-inch display that is used for turn-by-turn navigation, voice-guided driving instructions, real-time traffic reports and automatic re-routing.

But it’s a GSM phone too, so you can make and receive calls wirelessly with it thanks to Bluetooth technology.

The Motorola M990 Smart Rider phone will be available in June 2008.

LG KF300 for your Mom

By admin | April 10, 2008

LG finally revealed the mysterious LG KF300 - a name tag that surfaced not long ago without any further information available. As it turns out, the LG KF300 is the GSM variant of the CDMA-only LG SV300 Wine phone.

LG KF300 will liven up things for your old folks

The LG KF300 (be it Wine or not) is obviously targeted at the more… mature part of the population much like the original LG SV300. The name “Wine” comes from the “Wine Generation” (remember last time you set the alarm clock for your parents?). Its buttons, characters and speakers are twice the size of conventional phones making pressing, looking and hearing especially easy. It has even been awarded at the Ergonomic Design Awards event held annually by the Ergonomics Society of Korea.

With large alphanumeric keys and hardware shortcuts for the most frequently used features, the LG KF300 is not loaded with high-end features, but then again, it’s not meant to be the next do-it-all multimedia device. And it’s certainly the most feature-rich handset optimized for the elder customers that we’ve seen so far.

The LG KF300 is relatively large but compensates with a large 2.2-inch internal TFT display with QVGA resolution and the spacious keypad. Below the display there are four dedicated shortcuts for accessing Alarms, Organizer, Phonebook and Favorites.

The unique external surface hides a secondary 1.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The LG KF300 is also equipped with a 2 megapixel camera, a microSD memory card slot, FM radio and will run under a proprietary LG Flash-based user interface.

The LG KF300 will be available in black and pink. Availability and pricing are still not known.
